Lose your electricity? Worried about your hot tub freezing?

A recent severe ice storm has left thousands of people without power for days and some for over a week here in NE. While you can easily light a candle to see or put your frozen pizzas outside to stay cold what do you do with your hot tub? If you are lucky enough to have a fully insulated Sundance or Hot Spring Spa you should be ok for up to 5 days.  DO NOT DRAIN YOUR SPA! This won’t help because you don’t have power to run a wet vac to suck out the lines/components.  Here are some tips:
- DO NOT OPEN THE COVER
- Keep the cover closed and locked (don’t want a wind gust to open it)
- Wrap the spa with tarps to keep out drafts.
- If you have a generator, but can’t run the entire spa you should put a small heater in the equipment area. Be sure that it doesn’t touch anything and keep it on low to prevent fire. If there isn’t much room in there for the heater create a little tent around the equipment area and direct the heater to blow towards the equipment.
- When you get power back and start up your spa if you hear or see anything out of the ordinary- shut the spa off as you might have some frozen lines and should follow the directions above to defrost the equipment with a heater before turing the spa back on again.
- Lastly if you do end up with penguins living in your spa and freeze damage, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the cost to fix or replace your hot tub. Look into it!

Here is a note we received from a happy hot tub owner:

I wanted to share a story about my Sundance Spa that truly amazed me and I think will impress you also. On December 11 we had an ice storm that knocked out power all over. Estimates on power being restored was 2-5 days which made us concerned for the safety of the spa. I called your store 36 hours after losing power. Your sales person assured me that my spa would be just fine without power for up to 5 days. Knowing that temperatures had dropped to 10-12 degrees overnight I was not buying the 5 days but did feel a little less worried. We had wrapped the tub with plastic tarps after 24 hours which she also said was perfect. Our power was restored after 40 hours. We unwrapped the spa and you could have knocked me over with a feather-the temperature had dropped only 9 degrees. WOW!!! We made the right choice with Sundance.
